Mar Elias Cathedral (St. Elijah Cathedral): The Church of the Sacrifice and the Cave

The first church in Haifa was established in the 19th century by Carmelite monks.

Overview and Significance of the Churches:
The two churches were built to honor the Old Testament prophet Elijah (Elias), who was renowned for his unwavering faith in God and his battle against pagan worship. Many churches across different denominations bear his name, including the Catholic, Greek Melkite, Maronite, and Greek Orthodox churches. The oldest and most significant of these churches is in Haifa, often referred to as the “mother church.” It serves as a key pilgrimage site for Christians from around the world.

The two most notable churches are:
1. Monastery of Stella Maris /Church of the Cave: This church was built in 1836 and is named after the cave where Prophet Elijah sought refuge and resided. The church is constructed over this sacred cave.
2. The Church of the Sacrifice: Named after the miracle of Prophet Elijah recorded in the First Book of Kings, Chapter 18 of the Old Testament. This miracle marked the downfall of Baal worship. The prophets of Baal placed their sacrifice on the altar and prayed day and night, but to no avail. In contrast, Elijah placed his offering on the altar, drenched it and its surrounding with water, and fire descended from heaven, consuming the offering and the wood.
According to the Old Testament, Prophet Elijah hailed from Gilead (modern-day Jordan). He is one of the most significant prophets, calling for the worship of the one true God, his message signaled the end of Baal worship. In the New Testament, during the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Zechariah about the birth of John the Baptist, it was prophesied that John would come “in the spirit and power of Elijah.” Elijah’s famous declaration, “As the Lord lives, before whom I stand,” reflects his deep faith. Notably, the Bible does not mention his death but rather affirms that Elijah was taken alive into heaven in a fiery chariot.

Architectural Design: The church showcases Roman architectural elements, featuring an altar and several icons depicting Prophet Elijah’s confrontation with Baal worship.

The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Prophet Elijah annually on July 20th.
