Bethlehem Exhibition Opens in Chile: A New Birth… Palestine’s Message to the World

The Bethlehem: A New Birth exhibition has officially opened at the Cultural Center of the Presidential Palace in Santiago, Chile. Sponsored by the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs and previously showcased in several world capitals, the exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Embassies of the State of Palestine and supported by international partners and Palestinian business figures. At its heart, the exhibition highlights the restoration of the Church of the Nativity – one of the holiest Christian sites – delivering a powerful cultural and humanitarian message: Palestine is not merely a political issue but a living civilization with a rich and enduring heritage.

Organized by the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Chile, under Ambassador Vera Baboun, the exhibition arrives at a pivotal moment for Palestine, carrying a clear message of faith, history, and resilience. Through a collection of paintings, photographs, archival documents, and documentary films, it offers an in-depth chronicle of the restoration process that has revived the historic and artistic splendor of the Church of the Nativity. More than just an exhibition, it stands as a testament to the Palestinian people’s unwavering commitment to preserving their heritage despite persistent efforts to erase or distort it.

The inauguration was attended by high-profile diplomats, cultural figures, and artists, with Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren. The event also saw a strong presence from Chile’s Palestinian community, one of the largest in Latin America, reinforcing the deep cultural and historical ties between Palestine and Chile.

Dr. Ramzi Khouri, member of the PLO Executive Committee and Head of the Higher Presidential Committee, emphasized that Bethlehem’s Christmas message is one of light, hope, and peace for the world. He underscored the exhibition’s role in showcasing the Church of the Nativity as a global heritage site and called for pilgrimages to the Holy Land, particularly to its Christian and Muslim holy sites.

On behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas, Dr. Khouri extended his gratitude to all those who contributed to and supported the exhibition, helping to share the Palestinian narrative with the world, not only through diplomacy but also by illuminating the deep historical, religious, and cultural heritage of Palestine. He described the exhibition as proof of Palestine’s enduring presence and strength despite ongoing challenges. Additionally, he urged the Palestinian community in Chile to preserve their connection to their homeland and serve as a bridge between Palestine and Chile.

The exhibition features a diverse showcase of artistic and historical works, including documentary photography, architectural models, murals, and mosaics that celebrate the rich heritage of the Church of the Nativity. The event is further enriched by a vibrant cultural program featuring workshops, film screenings, and storytelling sessions, fostering dialogue and mutual understanding among different communities.

Notably, the exhibition will remain open for three months, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the beauty and depth of Palestinian heritage through art, history, and cultural storytelling.
