It is a church built on the tomb of Saint George in the third century in the city of Lydda, which is the largest and oldest cities of historic Palestine, located about 38 km north-west of Jerusalem. He was born in 280, in the city of Lydda in the Syrian mandate of Palestine to Christian parents of the nobility. The Romans persecuted Christians in that period, but St. George did not hide his Christian faith, despite joining the Roman army, which angered the Emperor Diocletian, so he was put under all kinds of torture. Many of those who saw him believed in Christianity, even Alexandra the wife of Emperor. After his death in 303, his remains were returned to be buried in his hometown of Lydda, Palestine.
