The Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs Calls for the Protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Occasion of Al-Isra and Al-Miraj

On the occasion of Al-Isra’ and Al-Mi’raj, the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine emphasized that Jerusalem and the Blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque—the site of the Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous night journey and ascension to heaven—are a sacred trust upon the Arab and Islamic nations that must be protected and defended.

In a statement released by Dr. Ramzi Khouri, member of the PLO Executive Committee and Head of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs, the Committee stressed that this occasion, observed tomorrow, Monday, serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard Al-Aqsa Mosque from the encroachment of Israeli occupation forces and settlers. These groups are relentlessly advancing Judaization agenda in occupied Jerusalem, targeting both its Muslim and Christian holy sites.

The Committee also raised alarms about the annexation, settlement expansion, forced displacement, and systematic destruction being carried out across the occupied West Bank by Israel’s far-right religious government. It drew attention to the devastating Israeli crimes in Jenin and its refugee camp, which mirror the atrocities of killing, displacement, and destruction previously witnessed in Gaza These actions not only undermine the Palestinian people’s rights but also threaten the sacred cause of Palestinian refugees.

The statement highlighted that the aggression in Jenin is part of a broader campaign of oppression by the Israeli occupation forces and extremist settler groups. The West Bank has effectively been transformed into a large open-air prison, with hundreds of military checkpoints and gates restricting movement. These measures are accompanied by horrific crimes, including killings and destructions, all designed to stifle Palestinian aspirations for self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. Without justice for Palestine, the Committee warned, there can be no lasting stability, security, or peace in the region.

The Committee further noted that this occasion comes at a time when the Palestinian people in Gaza continue to suffer immense pain and loss following the occupation’s brutal assault on their lives, homes, and livelihoods. It called on the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities and take immediate action to provide urgent relief, rebuild lives and end the cycle of destruction, displacement, and deprivation they endure.

In closing, the Committee reaffirmed the enduring bonds of unity, brotherhood, and love among the Palestinian people, both Muslims and Christians. It offered prays for the souls of the martyrs, a swift recovery for the wounded, and freedom for the courageous prisoners and detainees.
