Mount of Temptation or Monastery of the Temptation

The Monastery of Temptation is located in the city of Jericho, one of the oldest cities of Palestine; a city known throughout history, dating back to the Stone Age, about 7,000 years BC. It is a site where Jesus spent 40 days and nights fasting and worshiping.

The Byzantine city of Jericho existed around the current modern city, where many monasteries and churches have been discovered. One of the most important discoveries was the Monastery of the Temptation. The height of Mount of Temptation is over 350 meters to the west of the city of Jericho, which overlooks the Jordan Valley.

On the eastern slope of the mountain there are many caves, amounting to about 30-40 caves that were inhabited by hermits and monks in the early days of Christianity.

The name Mount of Temptation is derived from the Latin word “Vardargueta” which means “Forty”, a reference to the time Christ fasted and worshiped at the site.
